Five simple but effective April Fools’ Day computer pranks you can pull

April 1st, 2009

So today is April Fools’ Day, and it’s time to pull off some err, spectacular but otherwise harmless (almost always, at least?) pranks on your coworkers or friends and family. Sure, we all know about the more conventional April Fools’ Day pranks— tarantulas in phony presents, fake phone calls about dead relatives, among others. However, these "common" April Fools’ Day pranks often get dull and friends and family are more likely than not to be on the lookout for anything fishy going on— so what kind of prank can you pull that will catch your victim(s) unawares and scare the heck outta them? Simple! You hit them where they least expect—the computer.

Below I have come up with a list of what I think are the best pranks that you can quickly and easily pull on a victim’s computer without actually causing any actual damage (that is, to the computer Winking).

Wacko: The Church of Google

December 26th, 2008

The Church of Google - Googlism - Proof Google is God!

I don’t know about you, but I definitely did NOT see this one coming! Google has been growing from a small startup into a search engine giant. Everyone knows that.  But TheChurchOfGoogle.org has taken it to the next extreme level— the organization claims that Google has every right to become a “God”, and should be called as much!

The “Church of Google” has even created a “The Ten Google Commandments” stating that:

  1. Thou shalt have no other Search Engine before me, neither Yahoo nor Lycos, AltaVista nor Metacrawler. Thou shalt worship only me, and come to Google only for answers.
  2. Thou shalt not build thy own commercial-free Search Engine, for I am a jealous Engine, bringing law suits and plagues against the fathers of the children unto the third and fourth generations.
  3. Thou shalt not use Google as a verb to mean the use of any lesser Search Engine.
  4. Thou shalt remember each passing day and use thy time as an opportunity to gain knowledge of the unknown.
  5. Thou shalt honor thy fellow humans, regardless of gender, sexual orientation or race, for each has invaluable experience and knowledge to contribute toward humankind.
  6. Thou shalt not misspell whilst praying to me.
  7. Thou shalt not hotlink.
  8. Thou shalt not plagiarize or take undue credit for other’s work.
  9. Thou shalt not use reciprocal links nor link farms, for I am a vengeful but fair engine and will diminish thy Page Rank. The Google Dance shall cometh.
  10. Thou shalt not manipulate Search Results. Search Engine Optimization is but the work of Microsoft.

(This was excerpted from the website)

Somehow, the last one doesn’t come as a surprise to me!Open-mouthed

The “Church of Google” also has up a list of “proofs” that make Google a god, and many other things besides, including a mailing list for “Google Church Members”, an FAQ, and a Forum that proved to be quite entertaining. And not to mention that they are actually serious about what they are saying! But no matter how dubious the claims of TheChurchOfGoogle.org may be, it is a really nice site that is sure to put a smile on your face.
